Cold temperatures and reduced sebum production all afflict the skin in cooler seasons and make it dry out quickly. Skin which is already dry needs extra special care. Rich creams and soft skin oils support the skin’s natural regeneration

How does dry skin occur?

Some people have naturally very dry skin, whilst others only suffer from reddened and itchy areas of skin during the cold months. This then develops into rough and chapped areas and gives the skin an uncomfortable tight feeling.

This is often due to the sebaceous glands, as it is their job to provide the skin with oils and thus protect it from drying out. If there are only a few sebaceous glands or if they aren’t working properly, the skin will dry out quickly.

Very dry skin therefore often occurs in areas with not many sebaceous glands and not much subcutaneous tissue. This is particularly true of areas such as the elbows, knees or shins. Whilst the sebaceous glands produce plenty of sebum during puberty, sebum production decreases as you get older. The skin then needs increased, richer care.

External factors can be conducive to very dry skin developing. This includes cold, heat, sunlight, excessive contact with water, a poor diet or a lack of moisture.

Many people suffer from very dry skin especially during the cold months, as the cold deprives the skin of moisture. On top of that, the sebaceous glands produce less sebum during cooler seasons.

You should therefore give your skin plenty of attention during the cold months and pamper dry and very dry skin with a moisturising care cream. Find out more about the reasons for dry skin here.

How to strengthen your skin’s natural protective barrier

Simple and effective care tips for everyday

  • Don’t shower or bathe for too long in water that is too hot – 32 degrees is quite sufficient for the water temperature.
  • Moisturise your very dry skin on a daily basis with a rich body lotion. Rub in plenty of cream on especially dry skin areas such as the elbows, knees and shins, and let the body lotion absorb before you get dressed.
  • Always rub cream into your hands after you wash them. Hand creams with macadamia oil are absorbed quickly and provide very dry skin with intensive care.

Well-being for very dry skin

If the body is not supplied with enough moisture, the skin will dry out as well. For this reason, you should drink at least two litres of water or unsweetened tea a day. Avoid alcohol, as it causes you to sweat more quickly, which also causes your skin to dry out quicker.

Introduce new rituals to your daily care routine: Rub in a rich body lotion such as NIVEA Body Oil in Lotion before going to sleep. The skin regenerates extra quickly while you are sleeping. This allows the care cream to take full effect.

Care for areas of dry skin such as hands, elbows or knees several times a day with a cream developed specially for very dry skin.
